Law Instructor Position – Baltimore Police Academy

The Baltimore Police Department is hiring two full-time law instructors to join its existing Legal Education Unit at the Police Academy, located in Northwest Baltimore City. The Legal Education Unit is responsible for teaching all aspects of criminal and constitutional law to entry-level police trainees during their time at the academy. Additionally, the Legal Education Unit instructs some legal aspects of in-service training for existing officers.

Qualified applicants should be admitted to practice in Maryland and have at least 3-5 years of criminal trial experience in Maryland. Applicants should also possess teaching, instructor, or tutoring experience in some capacity, significant presentation skills, and the ability to work as part of a dynamic team. Qualified applicants should be comfortable teaching both new trainees and experienced officers in a variety of educational settings, ranging from formal classroom instruction to practical, scenario-based training.

Substantively, applicants should have an exceptional knowledge of Constitutional (1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, and applicable 14th Amendment) law, exceptional knowledge of Maryland Criminal Procedure Law, intermediate knowledge of Maryland Criminal Law, and intermediate knowledge of Maryland Criminal Court Procedure.

Applicants must be able to synthesize existing and newly created law and effectively convey that knowledge to officers of varying educational backgrounds. They should also have an interest in learning BPD procedure in order to merge law and practice (as would be necessary for scenario-based training).

Applicants must have some familiarity with and/or ability to learn to use educational instructional technologies (presentation software, messaging and grading software, learning/education software).

Applicants should have the ability to work independently on a project but also to provide and receive constructive criticism in the interest of improving the program and ensuring correct and appropriate legal guidance.


Salary starts at $80,000, but possible additional pay commensurate with experience. Full Baltimore City benefits included.
